History of India, 1780 AD, Second Anglo-Mysore War

The Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780-84) was a major conflict fought between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company.

The war began when the Mysore ruler Hyder Ali invaded the British-controlled territories of the Carnatic region.

The British were able to push back the Mysore forces and retake the Carnatic, but Hyder Ali's son, Tipu Sultan, continued the fight against the British.

In 1781, British forces led by General Eyre Coote defeated Tipu Sultan's army at the Battle of Porto Novo.

In 1782, the British launched a major offensive against Mysore, capturing the city of Bangalore and forcing Hyder Ali to sue for peace.

In 1784, the Treaty of Mangalore was signed, ending the Second Anglo-Mysore War and recognizing the British as the predominant power in India.

The war had a major impact on the political and military landscape of India, as the British had now established themselves as the dominant power in the region.
