History of India, 1817 AD, Third Anglo-Maratha War begins

The Third Anglo-Maratha War was fought between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire from 1817 to 1818.

The British had already taken control of much of India by this point, but the Marathas still held a large portion of western India.

The war began when the British invaded the Maratha territories in central India, and their forces met at the Battle of Mahidpur in December 1817.

The Maratha forces were defeated at the Battle of Asirgarh in January 1818, and the British army advanced towards the Maratha capital of Pune.

The Marathas were defeated again at the Battle of Kirki in April 1818, and the British occupation of Pune was completed in May 1818.

The Maratha forces were further defeated at the Battle of Poona in August 1818, leading to the surrender of the Maratha leader Daulat Rao Scindia.

The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Dewas Srirampur in December 1818, which established the British as the dominant power in India.
