History of India, 1857 AD, First Indian war of Independence, known as Indian Mutiny

The Indian Mutiny of 1857, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, was an uprising against the British East India Company in parts of the Indian subcontinent.

The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the Company's army in the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India.

The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region, and was contained only with the aid of troops which the Company had recently sent from Britain.

The rebellion is also known as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, the Sepoy Mutiny, and the Revolt of 1857.

The Indian Mutiny was a result of several factors, including the heavy-handedness of the British East India Company's administration, the stiffening of British social and racial attitudes after the completion of the conquest of India, and the specific resentment towards the British attempt to impose a new gunpowder cartridge on the Indian troops.

The British also introduced a new legal system, the 'British Raj', which gave the British absolute power over India.

The Marathas were stripped of their independence and their power was taken away, leaving them with no political or economic power.
