History of India, 1885 AD, Indian National Congress was formed

In 1885, the Indian National Congress (INC) was founded to voice the grievances of Indian people to the British government.

The INC was established by a group of English-educated Indians, led by the lawyer and scholar A.O. Hume.

The INC was initially a moderate political organization that advocated reforms within the framework of British colonial rule.

During this period, the INC was not a mass-based organization but was largely elitist and dominated by upper-caste Hindus.

In its early years, the INC was largely concerned with issues such as freedom of the press, access to public services, and civil rights.

The INC held its first session in Bombay (now Mumbai) in December 1885, with 72 delegates in attendance.

The INC was initially led by W.C. Bonnerjee, who was later succeeded by Dadabhai Naoroji, who became the first Indian president of the organization.
