History of India, 200 to 100 BC, Tholkappiyam standardized grammar and morphology of Tamil

Around 200 to 100 BC, the Tholkappiyam, a written grammar of the Tamil language, was standardized.

The Tholkappiyam was composed by the ancient Tamil poet Tholkappiyar and is believed to be the oldest surviving work of Tamil literature.

The Tholkappiyam is divided into three parts – the Porul (grammar), the In Porul (metrics) and the Pathinenkilkanakku (ethics).

The Tholkappiyam contains numerous verses discussing various aspects of Tamil grammar and poetics, as well as the ethical and moral responsibilities expected of Tamil speakers.

The Tholkappiyam's grammar rules are still used to this day by Tamil authors when writing in the language.

The Tholkappiyam also provided a framework for the writing of Tamil poetry and is considered to be the authoritative source of Tamil literature.

The Tholkappiyam standardized Tamil grammar and morphology, which helped to make the language easier to learn and use.
