History of India, 230 BC, Satavahana Empire was established
The Satavahana Empire was established in 230 BC and was one of the major Indian empires of the ancient world.
The empire was founded by Simuka, and its capital was Pratishthana (modern-day Paithan in Maharashtra).
The Satavahana Empire was spread across present-day Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Gujarat and Karnataka.
The Satavahanas were patrons of the Buddhist and Brahmanical faiths, and their rule saw the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism in the Deccan region.
During the rule of the Satavahanas, trade and commerce flourished and the kingdom became a major centre of learning.
The Satavahanas also built many impressive monuments, including the famous Buddhist stupas at Amaravati.
The Satavahanas were succeeded by the Western Chalukyas in the middle of the 6th century.
