History of India, 333 BC, Darius III was defeated by Alexander the Great. The Macedonian Empire was established

In 333 BC, Darius III, the last king of the Achaemenid Empire, was defeated by Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

Alexander's victory marked the beginning of the Macedonian Empire’s rule over India.

After Alexander's death, his generals divided the conquered territories among themselves.

One of these generals, Seleucus Nicator, established the Seleucid Empire in India, which lasted until 305 BC.

During this time, the Indo-Greeks controlled parts of northern India and established a string of cities, such as Taxila and Ai-Khanoum.

The Mauryan Empire was established in 322 BC by Chandragupta Maurya, who overthrew the Nanda dynasty and conquered much of northern India.

Under Chandragupta's rule, the Mauryan Empire extended from the Indus River in modern-day Pakistan to the eastern coast of India.
