Samudragupta, who was the son of Chandragupta I, rose to power in 335 AD and became the ruler of the Gupta Empire.

He is known for his military conquests and expansion of the Gupta Empire.

He subdued the neighbouring rulers of Prayag, Saketa, Kausambi, Padmavati and Ahichhatra.

Samudragupta also defeated two powerful rulers of the Deccan, Mahendra of Kosala and Achyuta of Vatsa.

He also defeated some of the rulers of South India, including the Pallavas and Cholas.

He also extended his kingdom northwards, up to the Himalayas.

He was also a great patron of art and literature and encouraged scholars to write in Sanskrit and Prakrit.
