History of India, 399 to 414 AD, Chinese scholar Fa-Hien traveled to India
In 399 AD, Chinese scholar Fa-Hien traveled from China to India via the Silk Road, in search of Buddhist texts.
During his five-year journey, Fa-Hien visited numerous Buddhist and Hindu universities and monasteries, including Nalanda and Vikramashila.
He wrote about the religious practices he observed and the great Indian universities he encountered.
He was particularly impressed by the great library at Nalanda which he described as a “nine-storeyed building".
Fa-Hien also noted the practice of vegetarianism which was common among Buddhists in India.
He also wrote about the numerous festivals and pilgrimages he encountered while in India.
Fa-Hien also observed and commented on the caste system in India at the time.
