In the 8th century, the Arab Muslims invaded and conquered most of the region, introducing Islam to the area.
During the Mughal Empire period (1526-1857), the region was divided into numerous small kingdoms, ruled by local rulers.
The British Raj began in 1858 and lasted until 1947.
