In 563 BC, Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, was born in the Shakya kingdom of ancient India.

He was born to a royal family and was raised with a life of luxury.

After witnessing the suffering of humanity first-hand, he renounced his wealth and set out on a journey to understand the cause of human suffering.

After six years of meditation and spiritual practice, he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, or the ‘Awakened One’.

His teachings of meditation and the Middle Path of moderation between the extremes of self-indulgence and self-denial shaped the foundations of Buddhism.

The Buddha's teachings spread throughout India and beyond, leading to the establishment of a large monastic community and the establishment of many Buddhist schools.

Buddhism has been influential in India for more than two thousand years and has shaped Indian culture, philosophy, and thought.
