Harshavardhana was the ruler of the Vardhana dynasty located in the north of India in 606 AD.
He was a great patron of art and learning and his court was graced by many great minds like the Chinese scholar Yuan Chwang.
Harshavardhana was a great warrior and conquered many parts of Northern India, including Bengal and Orissa.
He also gained control of the kingdom of Kannauj and made it his capital.
He was a great admirer of Buddhism and extended patronage to many Buddhist monks and monasteries.
He also patronised the famous Sanskrit drama, 'Nagananda' written by Harshavardhana's court poet Shudraka.
His reign saw the rise of the 'Puja-yajna' tradition which was the worship of Hindu gods and goddesses.
