In 630 AD, the Chinese monk Hiuen Tsiang traveled to India, where he documented his travels in his book, Great Tang Records on the Western Regions.
Hiuen Tsiang spent over fourteen years in India, visiting various cities and regions, and studying Indian culture and religion.
During his travels, he visited the great university of Nalanda and studied Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism.
He also visited the Buddhist holy sites of Varanasi, Sarnath, and Bodh Gaya.
Hiuen Tsiang encountered many kings and rulers, who donated generously to the Buddhist temples he visited.
He also encountered many scholars who were knowledgeable about Indian religious philosophy.
He noted that the people of India were tolerant of different religious beliefs and practices, and that Buddhism and Hinduism were the predominant religions.
