Tell me more about Lincoln’s goals for reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow laws

Abraham Lincoln wanted to reunite the North and the South after the Civil War, and he wanted to help African Americans gain civil rights and equal protection under the law.

He established the Freedmen’s Bureau to help former slaves adjust to their newfound freedom and gain access to education, food, and jobs.

He also issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared that all enslaved people in the United States were free.

He pushed for the passage of the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery in the United States.

After Lincoln was assassinated, the Reconstruction era ended and Jim Crow laws began to be enacted in many states.

These laws segregated African Americans from whites in public spaces, denied them access to education and voting, and barred them from many other civil rights.

The Jim Crow laws stayed in place until the mid-1960s when the civil rights movement began to challenge it.
