Jay Gatsby is a wealthy man who throws extravagant parties at his mansion in hopes of attracting the attention of Daisy Buchanan, his past love.

Nick Carraway, the narrator, moves to West Egg to become a bond salesman and is immediately intrigued by Gatsby's mysterious lifestyle.

Nick eventually becomes friends with Gatsby and is introduced to Daisy, who is now married to Tom Buchanan.

Daisy and Gatsby's relationship is rekindled and they become inseparable, with Gatsby hopelessly devoted to Daisy.

Tom and Daisy's marriage is strained and eventually Daisy decides to leave Tom for Gatsby.

Gatsby's past is revealed and despite his wealth, Daisy is embarrassed and decides not to leave Tom.

Gatsby is shot and killed by George Wilson, the husband of Myrtle, Tom's mistress.
