John D. Rockefeller was born in 1839 in Richford, New York.

He is best known for founding the Standard Oil Company in 1870, which was one of the first major trusts in the United States.

He was a pioneer in the fledgling oil industry, and his success in the industry led him to become one of the wealthiest individuals in history.

By the early 1890s, Standard Oil controlled over 90% of the refined oil business in the United States.

Rockefeller was also a major philanthropist and donated millions of dollars to educational and scientific causes.

He established the University of Chicago in 1892, and was a major contributor to the establishment of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1901.
