Sam Walton, born in 1918, was an American entrepreneur known for founding the multinational retail corporation Walmart.
He opened his first Walmart store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas and the business quickly grew.
By 1970, Walton had opened more than 125 stores and had created a network of interconnecting stores across the states.
Walton was also known for his philanthropic activities, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to charities.
In 1990, Walton was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor of the United States.
He was posthumously inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame in 2009.
Walton passed away in 1992 at the age of 74, but his legacy lives on through Walmart, which has become the world’s largest retailer.
