He is best known for inventing the light bulb and founding the General Electric Company.
His other inventions include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the storage battery.
Edison was the holder of over 1,000 patents and held a number of other business interests.
He was a major figure in the development of the electric power industry and the modern world.
He was also a leader in the fields of telecommunications, sound recording and motion pictures.
He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his achievements in promoting the development of electricity, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
