US National Monument: African Burial Ground National Monument - New York (2006)

African Burial Ground National Monument in New York City was established in 2006 to recognize and preserve the largest known excavated burial ground in North America for both free and enslaved African-Americans.

The site, which is located in lower Manhattan, is a memorial to more than 15,000 Africans buried during the late 17th and 18th centuries.

It is believed to be the oldest and largest African cemetery in the United States.

The monument has an interpretive center, where visitors can learn about the history of the African Burial Ground and its significance to the African-American community.

A memorial was erected in 2007 to honor the individuals buried in the African Burial Ground.

The memorial is a seven-story, bronze sculpture featuring a circle of 15 standing figures with raised arms.

The monument is open to visitors from April to October, and guided tours are available as well.
