Situated in California’s San Joaquin Valley, Carrizo Plain National Monument is a vast landscape of rolling grasslands, dotted with wildflowers and native grasses.
Home to the largest remaining native grassland in the state, the Monument is a paradise for native plants and animals.
A variety of mammals, including pronghorn antelope, black-tailed jackrabbits, coyotes, and badgers, inhabit the Monument.
The Carrizo Plain is also home to one of the most important archaeological sites in the state – the Painted Rock.
From April through June, the Monument is blanketed with beautiful wildflowers, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers.
The Monument is also home to an impressive array of volcanic features, including the Caliente and Temblor Mountains.
The Monument is also the site of a unique land formation known as the Soda Lake, which is an important habitat for many species of birds.
