US National Monument: Pompeys Pillar National Monument - Montana (2001)

Pompeys Pillar National Monument is located in Montana and was established in 2001.

This monument preserves the signature of explorer William Clark from the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Clark carved his signature and the date, July 25, 1806, into the sandstone pillar which can still be seen today.

The monument features a 150-foot sandstone pillar that sits atop a bluff overlooking the Yellowstone River.

Visitors can take a short hike to the top of the bluff and enjoy the sweeping views of the river below.

There is also a visitor center with interpretive displays and an outdoor amphitheater.

The monument is open year-round and is a great spot for bird watching, wildlife viewing and photography.
