What is a tornado? How are they formed?

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud.

They typically form during thunderstorms and are often referred to as a twister.

Tornadoes are capable of destroying entire cities and killing hundreds of people.

They are formed when cold and warm air masses form together and the warm air rises quickly.

This causes an area of low pressure, which in turn causes the air to rotate and form a funnel.

Tornadoes can range in size from small, barely visible vortices to monster storms that span more than a mile in diameter.

Well-known examples of tornadoes include the tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri in 2011 and the tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma in 2013.
